The SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon) also known as M249 is a light machine gun used by the US Military since the late 1970's.

In the game, the weapon has a very good rate of fire and can kill enemies with one shot making it useful for eliminating targets at short, medium and long-range distances or taking out large groups of enemies, it is also useful for destroying vehicles, boats and aircraft.
In-game it is considered an assault rifle and it shares ammo with all of the assault rifles in the class even though it is actually a light machine gun and is the only weapon in its category that cannot lock on to enemies (it can in Blind Rage though), despite being the best assault rifle in the game, it is also one of the first weapons the player will unlock much earlier in the game and have access to, since it can be taken from the helicopter that will chase the player through the highway after breaking into Gaspar Gomez's Penthouse, and putting it in the trunk of a car and in the weapons locker. At Reputation Level 7, the SAW will be unlocked and become available for purchase at arms dealers for $8,000 (making it the most expensive weapon in the game). It is also the only assault rifle in the game to not have any mods. The SAW can also be used as a mounted machine gun with infinite ammo and no cool down, the player and his allies/enemies may use them from gun emplacements, or from helicopters, Attack Boats, Cigarette Gun Boats and the Bodog Stampede. The SAW also has mild recoil and has a monstrous and loud firing sound when the player uses and fires it.
